Best Books 2016

It’s that time of year again when I take a look back at my favourite reads from the past year. This year there were some clear forerunners that I want to pay tribute to. Aaand here they are:

Best Picture Book:

ifihadagryphon

If I Had a Gryphon by Vikki VanSickle, illustrated by Cale Atkinson

The perfect book for budding fantastic beast aficionados and future Harry Potter fans (*stage whisper* or the kids of Harry Potter fans). Told in rhyme with vibrant illustrations, this adorable tale about a little girl who dreams of having a mystical creature for a pet is so much fun to read aloud.

Best Middle Grade:

14thgoldfish

The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm

Hilarious and thoughtful, this book is a must for tween readers! When Ellie’s mad-scientist grandfather shows up looking like a gawky teenager thanks to his latest discovery, Ellie is positive her life is about to go down the tubes. But pretty soon she’s realizing she has a lot more in common with her grandfather than she thought, and learning that change, though not always welcome, can be a good thing. Not only is this book a fun read, you also learn about famous scientists from history—it even comes with a short handy guide about the scientists mentioned in the book and facts about their discoveries. Edutainment at its best!

Best Young Adult:

Unlikely Hero

The Unlikely Hero of Room 13B by Teresa Toten

Anything I say here will not do this book justice. Just read it! So so fantastic! Adam is positive he’s met the love of his life, Robyn, in his OCD support group. He’s sure he can be the one to rescue her from her troubles. He can be the Batman to her Robin. But the person he should really be saving is himself. More than a story about mental health issues, this is a book about love. And, oh, how I loved this book!

What were your favourite reads from 2016?

Happy New Year, everyone! Wishing you cheer and good books in 2017!

  1. I’ve only read one Teresa Toten book but really liked it! I’ll have to try out another – the one you shared looks really good and I already have it on my list for this year!
