Whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah, Winter Solstice or Kwanzaa, there’s something here for everyone. So curl up by the fireplace and get cozy. You have twelve reasons this season to stay indoors and fall in love.
My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories, edited by Stephanie Perkins, is twelve short stories of love, seasonal mishaps and holiday hijinks, all wrapped up in one beautiful book. Each stand-alone story is written by a different bestselling YA author. Some authors you may already be familiar with. Others may be welcome surprises you’ll immediately want to add to your to-read list. But all of the stories will leave you with warm-chocolate-chip-cookie gooey feelings that will rival Ben’s gingerbread in Kiersten White’s contribution “Welcome to Christmas, CA.” This is a book sure to get you in the holiday mood.
Most stories are Christmas-centric, but there is a Hanukkah one, some New Year’s Eve tales, and even one involving Krampuslauf. The majority of stories are contemporary love stories, with a few more fantastical selections. Something for everyone.
I definitely enjoyed the contemporary stories more, but there wasn’t a single story that I didn’t enjoy.
My one small criticism would be that I felt the last story didn’t really fit with the rest. “The Girl Who Woke the Dreamer” by Laini Taylor was very different from the other stories. It was depressing and lovely and eventually hopeful, and I’m intrigued to read more by Taylor. But it didn’t have the warmth of the other stories and I felt it was an odd choice to end on—maybe it would have been better somewhere in the middle.
My True Love Gave to Me is chock-full of warmth, smiles, and a few bittersweet heart-string plucks. It is a definite must for the holiday season, and a gift that keeps on giving because I will definitely be going out to look up some of the new-to-me authors that I fell in love with in this book.
