Kid lit guru Susan Hughes will be a monthly contributor to Open Book: Toronto, where she will discuss Canadian children’s books and the children’s publishing industry. She kicks off her blog posts by asking three children’s book specialists to share their favourite Canadian reads from youth and current kidslit favourites.

Harry Potter was voted favourite fictional children’s book character on International Children’s Book Day, narrowly beating out the Gruffalo.

Middle-grade author Vikki Vansickle has announced the release of a new book, Summer Days, Starry Nights, due out in June 1st, 2013. She describes the book as “Dirty Dancing without the dirty” (Um, YAY!)

There are some big book birthdays going on:

Everybody’s favourite Pigeon turns 10! You can even celebrate Pigeon’s birthday with fun activities all centered around Mo Willem’s beloved character. (Maybe, even throw Pigeon a birthday party yourself?)

Also celebrating a milestone is Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic The Little Princeit turns 70 this year! In honour of the occasion, HMH has released three anniversary editions, including a special gift edition complete with an audio version read by Viggo Mortensen!
